I had originally planned on stopping at Rampart Lakes on my way down from my Alta mountain hike I did in early July, but time got the better of me that day so I wasn’t able to make it. I researched the “backdoor” route which is much shorter (and steeper) so Kayuh and I decided to give it a shot.
The minute I stepped out of the car at the trailhead, I was swarmed with mosquitos. It wasn’t until then that I realized I had left my bug spray sitting on my nightstand back home. I figured once I got moving they wouldn’t be so bad, and off we went.
We quickly arrived at Lake Lila and stopped for a brief minute for Kayuh to drink some water but the mosquitos were on us in no time so we picked up the pace and headed up to Laura Lake.
After Laura Lake the trail broke through the trees wound through meadows and tarns with views of the surrounding peaks. It really is a beautiful hike. Before we knew it we found ourselves on top of Rampart Ridge overlooking Rampart lakes below us.
The water was an amazing blue and they looked very inviting on a hot day but those damn bugs were so bad we decided to turn around at the lake and run back down.
I would definitely like to return and spend more time exploring the area but bug spray is a MUST! By the time I got back to the car my arms and shoulders looked like they had a rash from all the mosquito bites. Lesson of the day: Don’t forget your deet.
